Frederick Bordry, CTO of pan-European start-up Gauss Fusion, steers the stellarator programme aiming to connect a gigawatt-class fusion plant to Europe’s grid by the mid-2040s. An electrical engineer with a PhD in energy conversion, he spent ten years in academia before joining CERN in 1986, ultimately overseeing its entire accelerator complex as Director for Accelerators and Technology (2014-20) and leading the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade. Leveraging four decades on high-power converters, magnet systems and large-scale projects, he now channels accelerator expertise and industry partnerships toward commercially viable magnetic-confinement fusion.
