How to get started and learn blockchain programming

To make these developments possible, you need people trained for it, who know the technology in depth.

Much is being said about the possibilities of blockchain technology. This abstract technological framework behind the Bitcoin cryptocurrency is already being applied to other uses that take advantage of the possibilities of decentralization, such as streamlining and reducing document processes in international trade. And it is expected to serve many more. Among them, facilitating the so-called ‘smart contracts’.

To make these developments possible, you need people trained for it, who know the technology in depth. And that is precisely what is missing. Hence, both internationally and nationally, initiatives are emerging to deepen this technology and learn how to program blockchain.

This is the case of Blockchain Spain. “Responsible development of blockchain technology requires critical and elite professional training. Blockchain Spain is aware of the need to train experts and professionals in blockchain technology and in understanding the phenomenon of decentralization in order to develop its potential with the aim of improving society,” says this organization, whose mission is to promote the blockchain ecosystem in Spain.

They have courses of various types and levels: from initiation in bitcoin, ethereum and blockchain to programming in the latter two, through legal specialization or to invest or create an ICO. Depending on the type of course, the duration ranges from 5 to 45 hours. As for the teaching team, it is made up of engineers, computer scientists, macroeconomists, business developers, innovators, entrepreneurs, lawyers, etc., “all of them leaders in each of these fields with high levels of theoretical training and practical experience in the blockchain world,” they say.

The courses are structured in modules, so that each student can personalise their training according to their needs and previous knowledge. In some programs, students may choose to take all modules or only those in which they are interested. The price of a module can range from 121 to 300 euros and full courses can exceed 1,300 euros, depending on the case.

As for the methodology, they say they are based on collaboration and the creation of “learning communities where knowledge and experiences are shared”. They also have a job bank, given their direct contact with companies and startups that are developing blockchain applications, to connect talent with opportunities.

In this case, the courses are face-to-face, and are held at Impact Hub Madrid. For its part, Coursera offers an online alternative with its course “Bitcoin and cryptocurrency technologies”. Its purpose is not to teach programming, but for students to really understand what is special about Bitcoin and to know how it works on a technical level “to be able to separate fact from fiction when reading claims about cryptocurrencies, to have the conceptual foundations necessary to design secure software that interacts with the Bitcoin network and to integrate Bitcoin ideas into their own projects”.
