Machine Learning

Carla Brodley provides her thoughts on recent trends and advances in machine learning, trends that combine various algorithms like Linear regression, Neural nets, Decision Trees, etc. When trying to learn from data, the method you use is less important than collecting the right data, understanding the data, and being able to explain the model to the human being that wants the results of the analysis. The biggest opportunities for the future are transfer learning and the relationship between machine learning and humans. Finally another area that will need a lot of work in the future is “responsible data mining,” the idea of preserving the consumer’s privacy, particularly with medical data, while we aggregate data and build data models.
