Fusion energy is moving into a new stage. Carlos Alejaldre, one of the most influential figures in plasma physics and nuclear fusion, has directed key institutions: the National Fusion Laboratory of CIEMAT, the Deputy General Directorate of ITER and the implementation in Spain of IFMIF-DONES. Today he chairs the Governing Board of Fusion for Energy, responsible for the European contribution to ITER.
In this session he will analyse the real state of fusion, scientific and technological progress and the challenges that must be overcome for projects such as ITER or the stellarators of CIEMAT to make the leap towards a viable energy industry. It will also address its geopolitical dimension, its impact on energy security and Europe’s role in an increasingly competitive global scenario.
