Alberto Loarte

Alberto Loarte heads ITER’s Science Division, steering the ITER Research Plan, plasma-control design and wide-ranging R&D coordination. A fellow of the UK Institute of Physics and the American Physical Society, he pioneered understanding and mitigation of the intense thermal and particle fluxes that strike magnetic-fusion walls. Loarte has authored over 800 refereed papers, coordinated international studies via the ITPA network, and earned a PhD in atomic and nuclear physics from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Earlier, he led the EU R&D programme on plasma–wall interactions at JET (UK) and Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik.
