President and CEO in GlobalGiving
Dennis Whittle is the co-Founder and CEO of GlobalGiving.org, a Washington, DC-based online marketplace for philanthropy, which has facilitated over $18 million in funding to over 1,000 grassroots, high-impact projects worldwide. The idea for GlobalGiving emerged when, as a part of the World Bank's Corporate Strategy team, Dennis created the Development Marketplace - a unique open-access competition that enabled people with great ideas for addressing poverty to compete for Bank funding. The event's success revealed the potential of a "marketplace" for philanthropy - where anyone could post an idea and anyone could fund it. Dennis and co-founder Mari Kuraishi left the World Bank in 2000 and launched GlobalGiving, which is pioneering a new "bottom up" model for philanthropy and increasing social entrepreneurs’ access to funding. At the World Bank, Dennis also led initiatives in the Bank's Russia program, including housing reform and energy efficiency, and was an economist in the Bank's Jakarta office.
