“Innovation is doing something new and making it sustainable over time”

We interviewed Juan Zaffora, Director of Tech4Climate at Ship2B and collaborator of the Akademia program.

Juan Ignacio Zaffora directs Ship2B’s Tech4Climate, an investment and acceleration platform for startups with a high social impact in the field of sustainability and the environment. In addition, he is a collaborator of the Akademia innovation program, of the Bankinter Innovation Foundation, where he mentors student projects.

Ship2B is working to weave a network of entrepreneurs, investors, mentors and all the agents of the ecosystem to promote social innovation by supporting entrepreneurs who dare to take on major changes, including climate change.

Social innovation was analysed by the Future Trends Forum, the think tank of the Bankinter Innovation Foundation, in 2009, when the experts participating in the meeting identified the possibility of a new wave of innovation, which in addition to creating sustainable wealth, was focused on alleviating social problems. At Ship2B they focus on this type of innovation, and specifically Tech4Climate focuses on projects that take responsibility for fighting climate change.

In the following interview, you will be able to learn about the main lines of action of social innovation for climate change in which Ship2B is working:

  • Circular economy, with the aim of reducing both the entry and waste of materials, promoting recycling and making the use of resources more effective.
  • Water, protecting this scarce resource, both in its treatment and effectiveness of use
  • Agricultural sector, promoting the use of new technologies in this sector
  • Food sector, promoting, among other things, environmentally responsible consumption.
  • Reduction of C02, working to reduce gas emissions, pollution and the greenhouse effect.

But these lines of action are not only useful for new social innovation projects, but must be considered in any new project that is launched, whether it is an entrepreneurial project or an initiative within an already established company. It is increasingly important to take into account the climate and environmental problems of our planet and the need for everyone to collaborate so that they do not continue to increase, on the contrary, to reduce their impact.
