“The digital platform model has applicability in any sector”

The expert Albert Cañigueral, a benchmark in the digital platform economy in Spain, talks to us about the versatility and future of this organisational model.

Albert Cañigueral, Ouishare’s connector for Spain and Latin America and an expert at the Future Trends Forum, is one of the benchmarks of the new digital platform economy in Spain. What is a digital platform? Albert defines it as a scalable way of generating social and economic relationships, mediated by algorithms, quickly and on a large scale.

Businesses are being built on these platforms in any social, economic or political sphere. Platforms are used to create business models that generate income in various ways: intermediation, subscription, or freemium models. You could say that the platform is the organizational foundation of many business models.

Platform-based business models are revolutionizing many sectors of activity, giving rise to new competitors that break into the traditional market and are forcing the traditional player in the sector to innovate. This is provoking legislative reactions to regulate the sectors that are affected by this new platform model. But what Albert assures us is that we must understand the success of platform models that demonstrate their effectiveness and their ability to reach the general public in a useful way, to improve each and every one of the sectors, combining the positive things of each of the agents involved: the traditional and the platform-based.

And Albert also highlights that these platforms are also a great opportunity for entrepreneurship as they offer a simple and adaptable way to develop a business model efficiently and be able to reach the general public quickly. Albert offers us references to tools to work on, such as Simone Cicero’s Platform Design Toolkit or Sangeet Paul Choudary’s book Platform Revolution .
