Three Spanish startups that want to conquer the air and space

It is not a well-known sector, but there are interesting startups that you should know about.

If we analyse the sectors and subsectors in which there are the most startups, the portrait is usually more or less frequent: social networks, ecommerce, apps aimed directly at the user, B2B services… In general terms, there are a series of more concurrent activities in the startup world.

However, there are other sectors in which this type of company is also beginning to appear: aeronautics and aerospace are two of the most interesting. If you find it curious, we recommend you meet three Spanish startups that are struggling to stand out in these areas:

1. PLD Space

Perhaps the best-known Spanish startup within this range. With nearly 40 employees at its facilities in the Science Park of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, PLD Space has long stood out in all kinds of space rocket developments. It is currently finalizing the final design of the engine that will be integrated into Arion 1, the company’s first rocket, which is scheduled to launch by the end of 2018, after two years of testing of its liquid-fuel engine.

In addition, PLD Space also works together with the European Space Agency (ESA) within the framework of the Future Launchers programme and the Liquid Propulsion Stage Recovery (LPSR) project.

2. Skylife Engineering

Emerged as a spin-off of the Electronic Technology Group of the University of Seville, Skylife Engineering is a company dedicated to aeronautical Industrial Engineering, especially electronics applied to avionics, for the design and development of new products and/or improvement of existing ones. The company uses software design tools to develop, improve and realize avionics, mission, security and defense systems, real-time monitoring systems and flight management and control systems for unmanned vehicles, among other things.

3. Obuu

One of the last to arrive, but also one of the most interesting. Obuu works in the aeronautical field and specialises in stock management for both civil and military airlines. The startup, through a consulting service, offers reports with the status of the logistics structure, analysis scenarios and points for improvement of these airlines inside and outside Spain. It is currently the first Spanish startup to be part of the Airbus accelerator.
