Selection criteria for the Journalism Innovation Awards

Objective

The first edition of the Journalism Innovation Award, organised by the Bankinter Innovation Foundation, aims to recognise the key role of the media as a driver of social impact by bringing technological and social progress closer to the general public. In addition, it seeks to highlight its contribution to the promotion of competitiveness, entrepreneurship and sustainable development, fundamental pillars to promote innovation in Spain and project it internationally.

To achieve this objective and in order for interested people and/or institutions to present themselves, the Bankinter Innovation Foundation disseminates the celebration of the event in the national media.

Participants

Journalists and information professionals, regardless of their nationality, who present works related to innovation, in any field, and which have been published in national media, may participate in the call.

They must be published or disseminated between 2 March 2025 and 2 March 2026, both inclusive, in one of the newspapers, magazines, digital publications, television channels, radio stations, blogs, podcasts or video platforms whose scope of dissemination is local, regional or national.

Participants may submit as many papers as they wish.

About the Bankinter Innovation Foundation

The Bankinter Innovation Foundation has been working since 2003 to transform society through innovation.

Aligned with Bankinter’s purposes, it promotes the community of innovators from four key areas:

  • Knowledge, through the think tank Future Trends Forum.
  • Entrepreneurship, through its Startups and Scaleup Spain Network programs.
  • Education, with Akademia, with its actions in universities, and Inspiratech, bringing scientific research closer to the market.
  • Companies, to whose support and support the Cre100do Foundation is dedicated.

Categories

PRINT AND ONLINE PRESS AWARD

Works. Works may be submitted in any of the usual journalistic genres broadcast within the written press category, including online media and blogs specialized in innovation. From among the candidates, the Bankinter Innovation Foundation will select the 10 finalist works that will be submitted to the Jury, which will be the one to decide the prize.

Documentation. All works will be accompanied by a letter stating the full name of the author or authors, address, telephone number, email, X username if you have one and a brief biographical note. Likewise, the title of the article, the name of the medium, the date it was published and a paper copy of it (or in digital format in case the work is sent by email) must be included.

Award. A single prize of 10,000 euros will be awarded for the Print and Online Press category.

RADIO AND PODCAST AWARD

Works. Works may be submitted in any of the usual journalistic genres broadcast on radio, including podcasts on innovation and technology. From among the candidates, the Bankinter Innovation Foundation will select the 5 finalist works that will be submitted to the Jury, which will be the one to decide the prize.

Documentation. A copy of the work will be sent in digital format compatible with Windows Media, with the name of the author(s), title, means of communication, duration and date of issue. Likewise, a file must be sent in which the full name of the author or authors, address, telephone number, email, X user if available, brief biographical note, synopsis of the work and a certificate from the channel or director of the program in which it has been broadcast.

Award. A single prize of 10,000 euros will be awarded for the Radio category.

TELEVISION AND VIDEO AWARD

Works. Works in any of the usual journalistic genres broadcast on television may be presented, as well as informative or informative videos on innovation published on digital platforms such as YouTube, Twitch or social networks. From among the candidates, the Bankinter Innovation Foundation will select the 5 finalist works that will be submitted to the Jury, which will be the one to decide the prize.

Documentation. A copy will be sent in digital format compatible with Windows Media, with the name of the author(s), title, means of communication, duration and date of issue.

Likewise, a file must be sent in which the full name of the author or authors, address, telephone number, email, X user if available, brief biographical note, synopsis of the work and a certificate from the channel or director of the program in which it has been broadcast.

Award. A single prize of 10,000 euros will be awarded for the Television category.

INNOVATIVE FUTURE AWARD

It is aimed exclusively at people or initiatives that have emerged from the Bankinter Innovation Foundation’s programmes: Startup, Scaleup, Akademia or Inspiratech.

Its objective is to recognize the project with the greatest potential for impact on its economic, social or technological environment.

This award has no financial endowment.

INNOVATIVE CAREER AWARD

The Innovative Trajectory Award is an honorary recognition, which distinguishes the trajectory of professionals in the field of innovation, especially those linked to the Future Trends Forum.

The purpose of this recognition is to reward the sustained drive for innovation, highlighting those who, with their vision and leadership, contribute to the progress of knowledge and act as an inspiring reference for new generations.

This award has no financial endowment.

If the work is in Catalan, Basque or Galician, a translation into Spanish must be submitted.

Deadline for Submission of Papers

The deadline for the admission of original works closes on April 10 at 11:59 p.m. The jury’s decision will be announced at the awards ceremony to be held by the Bankinter Innovation Foundation before July.

Awards and financial endowment

The Award, aimed at all journalism professionals whose work promotes social awareness of innovation and publicizes the main advances in technology and science, has an endowment of 10,000 euros gross for each category, subject to the corresponding tax withholding.

  • Print and Online Press: 10.000 €
  • Radius: 10.000 €
  • Television: 10.000 €
  • Innovative Future Award: No financial amount.
  • Innovative Career Award: No financial amount.

The winner of the Prize will bear the corresponding taxation, if applicable. When the recipient is a taxpayer of Personal Income Tax, the Prize will be considered a capital gain, and will be subject to the withholding or payment on account that, where appropriate, must be made by the Bankinter Innovation Foundation in accordance with the applicable regulations.

By way of illustration, it is indicated that, in accordance with the regulations currently in force -which could have been modified or replaced at the time when the withholding or payment on account must be made-, the Prizes will be subject to withholding of 19% or payment on account provided that their withholding base (i.e., their amount if they are monetary, or the result of increasing its acquisition value or cost to the Entity by 20%, if they are in kind) is greater than 300 Euros (300.51 Euros in the event that the winner is a taxpayer of Corporation Tax).

Law 35/2006 on Personal Income Tax will apply; Royal Decree 439/2007, of 30 March, approving the Personal Income Tax Regulations; Law 27/2014, of 27 November, on Corporation Tax; Law 13/2011, of 27 May, on the Regulation of Gambling; Royal Decree 3059/1966, of 1 December, approving the Consolidated Text of Tax Rates; and other concordant provisions.

The Bankinter Innovation Foundation will be responsible, where appropriate, for the practice of withholding in accordance with the aforementioned regulations.

All of the above must be understood without prejudice to the tax regulations applicable in the Navarrese and Basque foral territories.

Award criteria

The jury will award the winner of each category – Print and Online Press, Radio and Television – a single prize of 10,000 euros per category. Those works that stand out for their journalistic and literary quality, as well as for their contribution to the dissemination and understanding of technological changes and the effects of innovation, will be recognized. Their ability to bring complex topics to the general public with rigour, clarity and creativity will be particularly valued, as well as their adequacy to the spirit of the award.

The prizes may be declared void and the jury’s decision, which will be final, will be made public at an event that will take place throughout the month of June 2026.

Fundación Innovación Bankinter will award the Future Innovative Award and the Innovative Trajectory Award, without any monetary amount.

Jury

The jury, made up of prestigious personalities appointed by the Bankinter Innovation Foundation, will freely decide on the awarding of the prizes. Likewise, a secretary will be part of the jury who will act on behalf of the Bankinter Innovation Foundation, with voice, but no vote.

Advertisement

The participants of the “Journalistic Award” cede to the Bankinter Innovation Foundation all the rights of public communication of the contents of their works, so that they can be assessed by the Jury and by third parties and entities, maintaining their moral copyright rights set out in Article 14 of Royal Legislative Decree 1/1996, of 12 April. Consolidated Text of the Intellectual Property Law, with no other consideration than the eventual obtaining of the prize provided for in these rules.

Participants will retain their intellectual property rights and guarantee their responsibility to the Bankinter Innovation Foundation for compliance with the provisions on intellectual property and image rights over the videos presented, declaring that their dissemination and/or reproduction does not harm or harm third parties. Participants who violate current legislation and cause damage to third parties will be responsible for any claim for damages they may incur.

Participants expressly authorise the Bankinter Innovation Foundation to use their name and image in the advertising material related to this competition, in any internal and/or external means of communication they deem appropriate, including the internet, for the sole purpose of ensuring the dissemination by any means and knowledge of the promotion of the competition. The publication of their name as selected among the finalist works will not generate any right in their favor to move on to the next phase if the participant does not comply with the rest of the conditions set out in these Rules, losing their status as finalist despite any previous publication. At all times, the information published will be adjusted to the basic publicity needs of the prize and its finalists.

Likewise, the personal data provided on the occasion of your participation will be processed for the purpose of informing you of future calls for the Awards, invitations to events, studies and surveys that may be organised and carried out by the Foundation.

Modifications and Release of Liability

The Bankinter Innovation Foundation reserves the right to cancel, modify or suspend the prize in the event that it cannot be carried out due to detected fraud, technical errors or any other type that is not under the control of the Bankinter Innovation Foundation and that affect its normal development. The Bankinter Innovation Foundation will adequately report any incident that may occur and that affects the normal development of the insolvency proceedings.

The Bankinter Innovation Foundation reserves the right to automatically cancel any participant who defrauds or alters the normal course of the competition or who carries out improper practices for their own benefit, to the detriment of third parties.

Confidentiality

In accordance with the provisions of the Organic Law on Data Protection, the data provided by the contestants will be used for the purpose of managing the Journalistic Innovation Award. Only the names and surnames of the winners and finalists will be made public, guaranteeing the confidentiality of the data of the rest of the participants.

Who is responsible for your personal data?

The personal data provided will be processed by the Bankinter Innovation Foundation, with CIF G83700187 and address at Paseo de la Castellana 29, 28046 Madrid.

For what purposes will the Bankinter Innovation Foundation process your data?

Fundación Innovación Bankinter will process your data for the following purposes:

  1. To comply with the legal obligations applicable to the Bankinter Innovation Foundation;
  2. Comply with the rights and obligations set out in these rules of the Journalistic Innovation Award. This treatment entails, among others, the following treatment operations: Reception of the work; evaluation and deliberation; communication of finalists and winners, as well as economic management of the prizes.
  3. To proceed with the search and contact of potential candidates in order to promote their registration in the Journalistic Innovation Award.
What are the legal bases on which the Bankinte Innovation Foundation processes your data?
  • For purpose 1: compliance with legal obligations.
  • For purpose 2: execution of the contract (rules of the Journalistic Innovation Award).
  • For purpose 3: legitimate interest of the Bankinter Innovation Foundation in promoting and disseminating the competition through the search for and contact of the professional location data of the journalist candidates whose professional role falls within the objective scope of the Journalistic Innovation Award.
Who are the recipients of your personal data?

Fundación Innovación Bankinter will communicate your data to the following recipients:

  1. Administrations, Authorities and Public Bodies including Courts and Tribunals, when required by applicable regulations or necessary for the prevention, investigation and discovery of fraud.
  2. In addition, service providers that the Bankinter Innovation Foundation contracts or may contract and who have the status of data processors may have access to personal data.

In general, the Bankinter Innovation Foundation will only process your data within the European Economic Area. However, the Bankinter Innovation Foundation may contract services that are provided outside the European Economic Area and that, therefore, involve an international transfer of data, only when necessary and always with suppliers that guarantee that such transfer will be carried out in accordance with the provisions of current regulations and/or to countries that have adequate protection guarantees. You are also informed that the Bankinter Innovation Foundation may carry out an international data transfer when required to provide information to foreign authorities.

What is the origin of your data and what categories of data does the Bankinter Innovation Foundation process?

The data processed for the purposes indicated in point 2 have been provided directly by you to the Bankinter Innovation Foundation (or to the processors acting on its behalf) when completing and signing the registration form enabled to participate in the Innovation Journalism Award. This form is sent, after granting your consent to participation, to the email address designated for this purpose.

The categories of data that will be processed are:

  • Identification data: name and surname,
  • Contact Details: email and telephone number.
  • Data derived from the works provided for participation in the Prize.
What are your data protection rights?

You may exercise your rights of access, rectification, deletion, opposition, limitation of processing and portability of data in the cases and to the extent established by the applicable regulations at any time.

You are also informed of your right to file a complaint with the Spanish Data Protection Agency.

How long will your data be stored?

Your personal data will be kept for the duration of the Journalistic Innovation Award, and once it has ended, it will be kept only for the limitation periods necessary to meet any responsibilities that may arise from participation in the Journalistic Innovation Award.

Full acceptance

Once submitted, the works may not be modified or withdrawn from this call. The Bankinter Innovation Foundation reserves the right to publish, issue, edit or disseminate the winning and finalist works in any format and medium without additional remuneration for this, and the candidate must have obtained the relevant permissions. The material sent will not be returned. Participation in the Award implies full acceptance of these rules. Questions not provided for in them will be resolved by the jury.

Legislation and jurisdiction

These rules will be governed and interpreted in accordance with Spanish law.

The participants, expressly waiving any other jurisdiction that may correspond to them, agree to submit to the jurisdiction of the Courts and Tribunals of Madrid capital.

The Bankinter Innovation Foundation reserves the right to automatically cancel any participant who defrauds or alters the normal course of the competition or who carries out improper practices for their own benefit, to the detriment of third parties.
