{"id":14323,"date":"2018-09-02T14:12:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-02T12:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/noticias\/retrato-robot-de-la-poblacion-de-las-ciudades\/"},"modified":"2025-12-01T23:29:21","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T22:29:21","slug":"retrato-robot-de-la-poblacion-de-las-ciudades","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/en\/news\/retrato-robot-de-la-poblacion-de-las-ciudades\/","title":{"rendered":"Robot portrait of the population of cities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;To understand life in cities you have to understand the population pyramids,&#8221; says  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chrisluebkeman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chris Luebkeman<\/a> , director of Global Foresight at Arup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u00bfC\u00f3mo cambiar\u00e1 la vida en las ciudades?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0wYf9vxtV0I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In Europe<\/strong>, there will be fewer and fewer people of working age and more retirees, which is being contributed to by <strong>the progressive withdrawal from the labour market of the baby boom&nbsp;generation<\/strong> of the post-war period.&nbsp;<em>&#8220;This, in turn, will mean an increase in the social spending burden of people of working age to meet the service needs of an ageing population.&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;  alerts the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Population_structure_and_ageing\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eurostat.&nbsp;<\/a><strong>The average age in the EU is now 42.6 years, and rising.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The US&nbsp;<\/strong>is not in the same situation:&nbsp;<strong>the higher birth rate compared to Europe compensates for the aging<\/strong>&nbsp;of a significant part of its population. There are more young people, partly thanks to immigration, and it is expected to remain so for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Africa is at the antipodes of this portrait<\/strong>: it has the youngest population on the planet, which ensures that it continues to grow at a very high rate. It is predicted, in fact, that<strong>&nbsp;half of the population growth until 2050&nbsp;<\/strong>(about 1.25 billion people)&nbsp;<strong>will take place on the African continent.<\/strong> &nbsp;Asia will be, with 900 million, the second region of the world that will contribute more human beings until 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contrast between Africa and Asia, on the one hand, and Europe (and, to a lesser extent, North America), on the other, is evident. <strong>\u00a0Properly managing immigration flows will be key to the survival of the system.\u00a0<\/strong> Although there are more factors to observe.\u00a0<em>&#8220;The aging of the population will make it increasingly important to have intelligent citizens, who are able to handle the technologies that are emerging,&#8221;<\/em> says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/en\/experts\/jaime-rodriguez-de-santiago-concha\/\">Jaime Rodr\u00edguez<\/a>, former general director of Blablacar for Spain, Portugal and Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ageing, health and the cit<\/strong>ies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reflection has to do with the&nbsp;<strong>healthcare model of the health system<\/strong>, which will be greatly demanded as the population gains age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Why is the health system organized so inefficiently? How are we going to tackle the demographic changes that are coming our way?&#8221; asks<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/en\/experts\/william-haseltine\/\">William Haseltine<\/a>, president of Access Health International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;The care model does not work, it will not be able to sustain itself with the aging of the population. Information technologies allow us to develop high quality and distributed healthcare.
