A charter that has served as inspiration for the adoption of more than seventy <strong>human rights treaties<\/strong>, which are now permanently applied not only globally, but also regionally.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/noticias\/crispr-y-envejecimiento\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Science<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/category\/tecnologia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/en\/news\/research-development-and-innovation-three-drivers-of-a-global-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">innovation<\/a> have been essential tools when it comes to defending, guaranteeing and complying with all these principles. The closest example is during the pandemic, in which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/noticias\/la-educacion-en-los-tiempos-de-pandemia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">right to education<\/a> was not interrupted thanks to the advances made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/noticias\/el-futuro-de-la-educacion-esta-en-los-ecosistemas-inteligentes-de-co-aprendizaje\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">possible by online education<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Internet, the great enabler  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is clear that the <strong>internet is the basis<\/strong> on which this remote education has been possible, since the necessary applications and tools have been built on this universal network so that, with sufficient bandwidth from telecommunications networks, <strong>online classes can be broadcast and followed<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Internet, moreover, is also the basis for other ways in which these <strong>universal human rights can be defended<\/strong>. Some examples:   <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Freedom of expression<\/strong>: the internet allows, free of charge, to open websites and blogs from which to express oneself freely.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Personal freedom and security<\/strong>: with the internet it is easier to detect, verify and denounce attacks on personal freedom and security that people may suffer due to their ideology, sex, religion, ethnicity or origin.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Slavery and trafficking<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/noticias\/token-y-blockchain-asi-funcionan-los-dos-conceptos-imprescindibles-en-nuestra-vida-digital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technologies such as Blockchain<\/a> make it possible to guarantee the traceability of all products and services, so that users can guarantee that no person has suffered conditions of slavery or trafficking in the production of them.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So much so that it is even said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openglobalrights.org\/covid-19-exposes-why-access-to-internet-is-human-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the internet should also be<\/a> considered a <strong>universal right<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the role of <strong>science, innovation and technology in promoting human rights<\/strong> goes much further.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Science at the service of humanity  <\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-1-1024x767.jpeg\" alt=\"Science at the service of humanity  \" class=\"wp-image-13154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-1-1024x767.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-1-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-1-768x575.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-1.jpeg 1380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, a group of <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar_lookup?author=L+Segal&amp;title=Promoting+human+rights+through+science&amp;publication_year=2017&amp;journal=Science&amp;volume=358&amp;pages=34-37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">researchers asked young scientists<\/a> how they thought their work could <strong>contribute to human rights<\/strong>. Among the answers, there are many areas in which this scientific research is carried out and that, without a doubt, improve and protect human rights. Among others, the following are cited:    <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make stronger <strong>foods<\/strong> to prevent malnutrition.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research and develop <strong>longer-lasting vaccines<\/strong> .  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create wearable personal health <strong>trackers<\/strong> .  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote genetically modified <strong>crops<\/strong> capable of withstanding harsh climates.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improve forensic <strong>anthropology<\/strong> to identify victims of genocide.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ecological<\/strong> research to maintain our terrestrial habitat. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not surprisingly, the relationship between technology, science, innovation and human rights is also very present in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/es\/2015\/09\/la-asamblea-general-adopta-la-agenda-2030-para-el-desarrollo-sostenible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/a>, in the sense that it must be ensured that &#8220;<strong>no one is left behind<\/strong>&#8220;.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in order to achieve this goal and therefore for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/noticias\/economia-colaborativa-cuando-la-sostenibilidad-es-rentable-social-y-sencilla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainability<\/a> to be rights-based, there are times when it is necessary for science and technology to stop and think about how they are carrying out these advances. In other words, periodic evaluations must be carried out <strong>on the impact and risks<\/strong>, both from the design of these new scientific and technological techniques and in their development, that these advances can have. The challenge is that if <strong>there are human rights risks<\/strong>, they can be identified and addressed before it is too late.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An example of this respect for human rights of technology is in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Publicacion-PDF-ES-FTF_BigData.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the processing of data<\/a> to <strong>detect mass migrations of populations<\/strong> and the impact that different pandemics can have on the world. To do this, the data sent by satellites are used to monitor displaced people to ensure their safety. But to do so with full safeguarding of people&#8217;s rights, all this information must be completely anonymized.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Science, technology and innovation<\/strong> come together in these situations not only to offer solutions that improve people&#8217;s lives, but to do so while respecting their human rights and functioning, at the same time, as a safeguard of them.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, we analyse how science, technology and innovation have contributed to its defence, guarantee and preservation.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":13158,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_oaas_summary":"Since 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights established by the United Nations has outlined fundamental human rights that must be protected worldwide. For example, data from satellites is used to monitor displaced populations while ensuring privacy through anonymization. Together, science, technology, and innovation not only provide solutions to improve lives but also function as safeguards that respect and promote human
