{"id":30068,"date":"2020-01-16T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/noticias\/biobots-between-living-beings-and-robots\/"},"modified":"2020-01-16T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T11:00:00","slug":"biobots-between-living-beings-and-robots","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/en\/news\/biobots-between-living-beings-and-robots\/","title":{"rendered":"Biobots, between living beings and robots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An American research team, made up of biologists; <a title=\"Michael Levin \" href=\"https:\/\/ase.tufts.edu\/biology\/faculty\/levin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Levin <\/a>and <a title=\"Douglas Blackisto\" href=\"https:\/\/douglas-blackiston.weebly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Douglas Blackiston<\/a>, and two robotics experts; <a title=\"Josh Bongard\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/cems\/cs\/profiles\/josh_bongard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josh Bongard<\/a> and <a title=\"Sam Kriegman\" href=\"https:\/\/skriegman.github.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sam Kriegman<\/a> have created the <strong>first biobots, programmable living organisms.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The creation of this biobot has followed <strong>a process that could not have happened without the Deep Green supercomputer <\/strong>at the University of Vermont. For months, <g id=\"gid_1\">the behavior of hundreds of cells of the African clawed frog has been observed. <\/g>These behaviors have been studied and behavioral structures of these cells have been created. Subsequently, <strong>an algorithm has chosen the most appropriate structure designs for a certain area or activity.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>The result is a<strong> small biological machine<\/strong> (created from hundreds of frog cells) <strong>capable of replicating the behavior determined by its creator <\/strong>(in this case, scientists). From this process, scientists have <strong>configured the biobot into 4 types of behaviors:<\/strong> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Object manipulation, <\/strong>biobots target and push particles in their environment,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Object transport,<\/strong> biobots could be created with a hole in the middle that could be used to transport objects,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Collective behavior,<\/strong> several biobots could collaborate to perform movements,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resistance,<\/strong> it has been proven that if the biobot breaks it tends to rebuild itself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is only a proof of concept, but <strong>it opens the door to getting different cells to build specific structures<\/strong>, and therefore also behaviors defined by the creator. This is a <strong>revolution in areas such as:<\/strong> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Regenerative medicine,<\/strong> since parts of the body can be rebuilt or their regeneration can be encouraged.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The development of robotics,<\/strong> making machines have behaviors very similar to biological ones.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Automation of the manufacture of computer designs <\/strong>of bespoke living systems for bespoke functions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Application of Artificial Intelligence to organisms.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is the <strong>first step in a revolution of new materials<\/strong> and as Josh Bongard, one of its creators, assures. <em>&#8220;It seems that these biobots are a third class of animated matter: they are not robots and they are not, strictly speaking, organisms. I think these biobots will force biologists and philosophers to rethink our definitions of life and what a machine is.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Biobots are
