{"id":30859,"date":"2024-01-18T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T08:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/noticias\/the-logistics-market-from-earth-to-space\/"},"modified":"2025-12-19T08:45:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T07:45:17","slug":"the-logistics-market-from-earth-to-space","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/en\/news\/the-logistics-market-from-earth-to-space\/","title":{"rendered":"The logistics market from Earth to space"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/en\/ftf-informes\/espacio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>commercialization of the space<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 currently led by the contract<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/sp-2014-617.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/sp-2014-617.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA&#8217;s Commercial Orbital Transport Services<\/a> , or COTS\u2014will undoubtedly be a huge leap forward. One that until now was led by giants such as Virgin, Blue Origin, SpaceX, but in which small companies are increasingly involved.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is there room for SMEs in the space?  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On October 7, 2023, the Spanish SME PLD Space (150 workers) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9j-lQNQwC5c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">successfully launched Miura 1<\/a>, a <strong>suborbital launch vehicle<\/strong> with a payload of 100 kg, from Huelva. Just a decade ago, this milestone would have been seen as unachievable. Today, the Miura 5 is being dreamed of, which will be able <strong>to lift devices weighing up to 540 kg into orbit<\/strong>, and through a recoverable module. How did we get here?     <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Innoverse News Noviembre &#039;23\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9j-lQNQwC5c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This makes space and suborbital flight cheaper  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During and after the Cold War, space agencies led by RSA and NASA have made possible the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionbankinter.org\/en\/news\/what-we-can-learn-about-earth-from-space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">space exploration<\/a> that took us to the Moon. However, the operating prices of both administrations, mainly for reasons of security, bureaucracy and quality, increased until they drowned out the launch programs. In 2011, for example, the United States canceled the Space Shuttle program.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has not been until the <strong>liberalization of space and the outsourcing of private companies<\/strong> that we have seen &#8216;many&#8217; people in orbit again. In May 2023, the world record of 20 people at a time in space was achieved thanks to the addition of the ISS, Tiangong and Unity 25 (suborbital flight). Obviously, and as the Spanish PLD Space demonstrates, liberalisation is <strong>continuously preceded and accompanied by public funds<\/strong>, as is the case of the NextGenerationEU in Spain; or state plans such as the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This liberalisation transfers the risk of failure to private companies (many go under after repeated failures and others have to be rescued by investors), creating an <strong>ecosystem of competitiveness<\/strong> in which a few achieved viable launches at a lower cost. Once the cost of technology was reduced across the industry, they <strong>opened the door to small businesses<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the experience curve, the higher the cumulative volume of production, the lower the direct cost for each new unit produced, and the same is happening with launches. Each one is slightly cheaper than the last. And, because it&#8217;s cheaper, it makes it more accessible to younger, smaller businesses, accelerating the cost-cutting cycle.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reusing rockets, a key technical milestone  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using a <strong>reusable orbital launcher<\/strong> like the one PLD Space designs<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pldspace.com\/es\/miura-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pldspace.com\/es\/miura-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with Miura 5<\/a> is an imperative step in reducing the costs of each launch.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although &#8216;only&#8217; the first stage, the one that propels the cargo into space, is reused, this is already a point of support to be able to sell cargo transport at a low cost. According to PLD Space sources, it is possible <strong>to reuse this stage up to 15 times<\/strong> .   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The risks of seeding space with objects  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already in 2018, it was estimated that there had been<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/noticias-46408633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/noticias-46408633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 2600 satellites<\/a> in orbit that were not working, about 17,000 objects and up to half a million fragments. That they continue to accumulate is a risk due to Kessler&#8217;s syndrome, an increasingly likely <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20000901071135\/http:\/\/ston.jsc.nasa.gov\/collections\/TRS\/_techrep\/TP-1999-208856.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20000901071135\/http:\/\/ston.jsc.nasa.gov\/collections\/TRS\/_techrep\/TP-1999-208856.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A chain reaction of satellite explosions<\/a> because the shrapnel of some would be like the beginning of the explosion of others that, if very <em>virulent<\/em> (it has already happened on a &#8216;small&#8217; scale) could leave us trapped on the planet for centuries as we are unable to enter orbit safely.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in this cost-benefit analysis about putting objects into orbit, and how many objects, there is also room for humanity&#8217;s big questions like &#8220;<strong>Are we alone in the universe?&#8221;<\/strong> Because if we&#8217;re not, placing a Clarke Belt (a cloud of satellites around the planet) is a perfect marker for anyone watching, little less than an invitation to the planet, as physicist H\u00e9ctor Socas-Navarro discusses in <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1802.07723\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1802.07723\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this scientific article<\/a>.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Developing an off-Earth logistics market is one of humanity&#8217;s most relevant commercial exploitation opportunities, as logistics by land, sea and air was at the time. Beyond economics and technology, the expansion of satellite networks also touches on profound questions about humanity\u2019s place in the universe, as an abundance of satellites could serve as a signal to potential extraterrestrial
